God works in the most mysterious ways. The very first song that David Martin Scales and don wrote together was this one, which served six years later as a fitting epitaph for David's life, which was taken during the 9-11-01 terrorist attack on the Pentagon:
FLY POLYPHEMUS
This morning when i met you
Outside the silent wall
Your body bruised and battered
You were headed for a fall
This afternoon you showed me
What it means to seek the light
When you spread your wings
And launched your flight
Fly Polyphemus
Reach for the sun
One day i'll join you
When this life is done
I'll be lookin' for you
At the rainbow's end
But i'll know i've lost a friend
'Til we meet again
We learn the sky's the limit
When our earthbound cares are lost
But i don't believe your takeoff
Was a choice without a cost
I stood in stark amazement
As you rose into the sky
And left me here standing by
REPEAT CHORUS
Some people always claim to have
The peace to make me whole
But they can't help me understand
What's missing in my soul
When i watched your mortal spirit lift
It made my psyche shift
Thank you for that gift
Maybe there's a heaven
Where old friends can congregate
I guess until we get there
We can never know our fate
Maybe i'm the only one
Who hopes to see you there
With open wings and answered prayer
REPEAT CHORUS
I know i've lost a friend
'Til we meet
Again

Note: The Polyphemus is a large and beautiful moth inhabiting portions of the Eastern United States. Because Polyphemus has what looks like a large eye on its wing, it gets its name from a character in Greek mythology who was a cyclops. Obviously, the Polyphemus in this song is a metaphor for something much more eternal.

The Hard Stuff!
Songs can address even the most difficult subjects.
ANGER JUNKIE BLUES
Your face turns red, you bare your teeth The rafters shake and shiver There's hurt behind the words you speak
But that ain't nothin' new
Lookin' for the lightnin' that'll zap your brain
Hurricane of power rushin' through your veins
Givin' up control because you can't explain
You've lost all hope to choose
Your anger junkie blues
Your eyes burn red, your mind won't click
You belch a stagnant river
And if your disposition switches
That's a tell-tale clue
Runnin' out of energy to pitch a fit
Gotta find a way to cop another hit
No one better try to cut you off from it
You've lost all will to lose
Your anger junkie blues
When rage blazes high
It's true that you can fly
But the crash comes so fast
You wanna die
Your blood drips red, you curse at Jesus
Salvation undelivered
You're good as dead but don't believe us
Blown without a fuse
Screamin' for some medicine to ease the pain
Tidal wave of cravin' rippin' through your brain
Need a hit of hate before you go insane
There's nothin' you can do
Lost without a clue
This whole world's just like you
Drunk without no booze
On anger junkie blues
Anger junkie blues
Anger junkie blues

Spiritual Sustenance
Sometimes the answer is only a song away.
THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME
There were times i felt so lonely when i thought of God as only someone who had shown His face in ancient days
And my prayers were all half-hearted
'cause the knowledge He'd imparted
seemed as distant as mirages in the haze
In my ordinary dealings
i had trouble with my feelings
it seemed nothing i had studied could explain
I would lie awake obsessing
but despite my frantic guessing
all my thinking couldn't take away the pain
Then the Holy Spirit came and changed my life
Gave me strength to rise above the daily strife
Yes the Holy Spirit came and filled my heart
Put in me a place of peace that will not part
When the Spirit came and warmed me
i sensed that He had transformed me
from the selfish fearful loser i had been
And where i once felt a coldness
very soon i knew a boldness
as the Holy Spirit's power swelled within
For the Holy Spirit came and changed my life
Gave me strength to rise above the daily strife
Yes the Holy Spirit came and filled my heart
Put in me a place of peace that will not part
When i'm walkin' in the Spirit
if the Lord speaks i will hear it
for at last i recognize my Shepherd's voice
Since the Holy Spirit's present
His yoke feels so light and pleasant
and i'm grateful that He's given me the choice
With this access to the Father
i no longer need to bother
with those worries and concerns of what will be
Now my life is filled with caring
for my purpose is in sharing
how the Holy Spirit's truth has set me free
For the Holy Spirit came and changed my life
Gave me strength to rise above the daily strife
Yes the Holy Spirit came and filled my heart
Put in me a place of peace that will not part

Let's Laugh!
The best medicine.
MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING BLUES
I was sittin' at the bus stop fishin' for some pocket change When i came across a glossy ad with a whole lot of famous names
They'd found financial freedom workin' in their leisure time
To find out how to check it out well it wouldn't cost a dime
I pictured my pile of bills back home and figured it couldn't hurt
I ripped the ad right off the page and stuck it in my shirt
Say hey multi-level marketing blues
Paydays are comin' to my wallet real soon
Before i make big money i got to wear the shoes
I got the fundamental multi-level marketing blues
I punched that toll-free number and it said they'd call me back
That afternoon in my living room sat a man from the inside track
He drove me to a meeting where they cheered and clapped their hands
They told me their excitement was all part of the business plan
The way for me to join the fun well it wasn't very hard
They'd gladly take my cash or check, my debit or credit card
Say hey multi-level marketing blues
Paydays are comin' to my wallet real soon
Before i make big money i got to pay my dues
I got the fundamental multi-level marketing blues
I purchased all the sales aids and i polished up my pitch
Wrote down a thousand contact names -- i'm gonna be so rich!
But now my master bedroom, my trunk and my back seat, my closets and my halls are filled with junk nobody needs!
Say hey multi-level marketing blues
Paydays are comin' to my wallet real soon
Before i make big money i got to learn to lose
I got the fundamental multi-level marketing blues
Now i've lost my friends and family, my health has hit the skids
My wife lives at her mother's house, i'm laughed at by my kids
My bank account is empty and my sponsor's disappeared
I don't think i'm exaggerating to say it's a little weird
But just around the corner is the cure for my distress
A scientific system sure to guarantee success!
Say hey multi-level marketing blues
Paydays are comin' to my wallet real soon
Before i make big money i got to change my views
I got the fundamental transcendental
chronic inter-continental
more than mental
so disheveled
Evil schemin' from the devil
